Worst Films of 2017

Worst Films of 2017

Ahhhh. 2017. The best of times...the worst of times. This year I only have a few stinkers to point at--mostly because I opted out of my yearly summer challenge of #GottaSeeThemAll and saved myself from the glut of bad movies that came out this past year. I otherwise just avoided films that looked painfully awful. Having said that, there were still plenty of bad ones that surfaced. I had a few more on my mediocrity and overrated list like LIFE and MOTHER but I narrowed my list to just 5 really awful films. If there is a theme throughout all five of these I would say it is wasted potential. Any of these films had the chance, the premise, or even the talent to be something interesting, subversive, challenging, or fun. They were none of those things.

Here are my 5 worst films of 2017:

5. FREE FIRE: In a world of knock off action films, this is the knockiest knock that ever knocked. A film that is too busy trying to be cool that it doesn't realize how stupid it is.

4. THE MUMMY: A primer on exactly how *not* to do a Hollywood blockbuster. A film so bad that as the debut for Universal Studios "Dark Universe" it killed the franchise.

3. ROUGH NIGHT: In a year that had its share of films that promoted women, this is one that is a serious setback. A movie that is forgettable with cheap jokes about drugs and sex and plenty of physical pratfalls, despite that it could have been much more.

2. BRIGHT: Netflix has taken what might have been a good long form series  and crammed it down into a blockbuster (?) that cost $90 million and looks like $9. With very little world building or exposition, this is just ALIEN NATION meets TRAINING DAY

My full review: BRIGHT

1. DOWNSIZING: Matt Damon sure knows how to pick 'em. This film has an interesting premise that is torpedoed by racially insensitive humor, hamfisted social commentary, and a protagonist that is as palatable as unflavored gelatin.

Here is to 2018 with fewer bad movies...although if #GottaSeeThemAll is in my future...there are no guarantees.
